A woman who suddenly became ill at a Killarney leisure centre swimming pool yesterday (Thursday) afternoon has died.

The woman, who was aged in her 40s is believed to have been Eastern European and was living in the town. She enjoyed swimming almost daily, but suddenly took ill while in the Gleneagle Hotel leisure centre pool, at around 2.30pm.

Lifeguards came to her aid and the emergency services were on the scene within minutes, including the newly launched community air ambulance which was stood down.

The lady, who was unresponsive when removed from the water, was removed by ambulance to University Hospital Kerry (UHK) but later died.

Today (Friday), the Gleneagle Group offered their sympathies to the woman’s family saying it was ‘very tragic and sad for all concerned’.
