It was a busy weekend for brave volunteers of the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) who had two callouts – one in very difficult weather conditions.
On Saturday, the team were tasked to evacuate a female hillwalker with a lower leg injury near the base of the Zig-Zags on Cnoc na Toinne at approximately 3.50pm. A number of team members on the hill assisted the casualty to Ard na Locha where she was evacuated by Land Rover to Lisleibane.
Later in the afternoon at approximately 6pm, the team was again called this time to an incident at the summit of Carrauntoohil where a male walker in his 60s had taken ill. Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 115 was on scene but due to poor weather conditions was unable to assist with the evacuation of the casualty.
KMRT members climbed to the summit and treated the casualty on scene before short-roping him down to Ard na Locha via the Devil’s Ladder. The casualty was then taken by Land Rover from Ard na Locha to an awaiting ambulance at Kissane’s Cross. A total of 16 team members were involved in the rescue operation which concluded at 00.30.
