Killarney firefighters this week conducted a fire safety assessment of 12 underground car parks in the town – following a recent serious fire in a Cork shopping centre.
Dozens of cars were destroyed in the blaze at Douglas Village Shopping Centre on September 1.
There were no casualties or injuries in the huge blaze, which started when one vehicle in the car park caught fire.
There are 12 underground car parks in Killarney, most of which are attached to well-known hotels and one underneath the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport on New Road.
Crews from the Killarney branch of the Kerry Fire and Rescue Service checked hose reels, fire exits, emergency lighting and extinguishers.
The building on Park Place off High St., where the Killarney Advertiser is based, is also served by an underground car park. There is also a public-accessible car park under the Central Point Shopping Centre on Park Road.
