It will be a festive season with a difference for six Killarney men as they make plans for an unusual Christmas Day in Lebanon.
Lt Denis Sheahan, Private David Crowley, Private Cameron Murphy, BS Henry Leahy, Cpl Luke Switzer and Lt Shane O’Neill are among the 460 members of the Irish Defence Forces who are currently serving in the small Middle Eastern country.
Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Lt O’Neill said it will be strange to spend Christmas abroad, but he and his fellow soldiers are in good spirits.
“We’re all enjoying our time over here,” he said. “It’s great to experience a different culture and the nature of our work is very diverse and challenging.
“We’ll be thinking of all our family and friends in Killarney over the coming days and we hope that everyone back home has a great Christmas. And it goes without saying that the lads will be looking forward to reading the Christmas edition of the Killarney Advertiser online.”
In total, 650 Irish Defence Forces personnel are currently serving in 13 countries all across the world.
