Finish line in sight for micro track construction project

By Sean Moriarty

The Killarney Micro Track is less than three weeks from completion.

Fencing work at the track was completed last week and lighting and basketball hoops were being  installed this week.

Once these tasks are out of the way it is hoped that the track laying work will begin but this is weather dependent but it is hoped all works will be finished in the next two to three weeks with a late October opening on the cards.

“The track laying will need four the five dry days in a row,”  funding coordinator Gerry Griffin told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are closely watching the weather sites and Monday October 8 could be a good week to start laying the track, but it is Ireland in October so we have to be optimistic.”

The micro track, also known South and East Kerry Community Rural Track project is located on the grounds St Brendan’s College, and will benefit up to 2,000 students from nearby schools, athletic clubs, paralympic athletes, Special Olympics athletes and community groups.

An open public meeting will take place on Wednesday night at the Killarney Court Hotel. More details of the track and the opening time table will be revealed at the meeting.
