Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club’s seventh annual Tour of Sliabh Luachra Sportive will remember two of the club’s most popular members.
Set for Sunday, June 30 participants can chose from three routes, 105k, 75k or a 20k family route, which covers the east side of Sliabh Luachra, in memory of club members Willie Reen and Paud O’Leary.
The event, which was previously known as the Tour of Sliabh Luachra,is traditionally seen as the perfect one for those in final preparations for the Ring of Kerry Cycle, which is scheduled for the following Saturday.
Paud O’Leary (42) was out training for the Ring of Kerry Cycle for the Down Syndrome Association when he was struck and fatally injured at Scrahan Fada, Gneeveguilla on July 1, 2012.
Willie Reen was a member of the well-known garage family in Rathmore whose family business Reen’s of Rathmore are long-time sponsors of the club’s sporting and competitive cycling teams. He died in June 2012 following an illness.
Sunday’s event will raise funds for the juvenile division of the club.
“This club was set-up in memory of Paud and my son Willie,” John Reen, Club President and sponsor, said. “We are trying to promote the junior side of things and bring on that side of it and funds will go towards their races and competitions.
“We have three fantastic routes on offer suitable for all abilities, and this year is our first year having a 20k family route,” added Club PRO Denise Wall. “It is a great day out on the bike.”
