NEW WALKWAY: Pupils and staff from Barraduff NS pictured during the opening of their new Active Schools Walkway on Wednesday.
One school is focusing on inspiring pupils to get active after officially opening their brand new Active School Walkway, this week.
On Wednesday, 85 pupils from Junior Infants up to Sixth class, completed a total of 1.2kms by walking their new 400 metre track three times at Barraduff NS.
And Declan O’Donoghue, who regularly participants in triathlons and Iron Man events and represented Ireland on many occasions, officially opened the new walkway around the school boundary, explained Gearoid O’Sullivan, Active School Flag Co-ordinator for Barraduff NS.
“Declan is a parent in our school,” Gearoid told the Killarney Advertiser.
“He spoke to the pupils about his sport, his fitness regime, his diet and also inspired them to try new sports and engage in an active, healthy lifestyle.”
And he added that as part of their Active School Flag initiative, and they erected walkway signs around the boundary of the school.
“The senior pupils partner with the junior pupils for the walk and chat to them as they walk. All pupils will do this every Wednesday and it is known as ‘Welly Walk Wednesdays’, all part of our Active School Flag initiative!”
