Killarney honours Tidy Towns ‘team captain’
HER dedication to Killarney Tidy Towns was highlighted at a civic reception for Yvonne Quill on Monday evening. The event, organised by Mayor Sean Counihan and Killarney Town Council, took place in the council chambers at the town hall, where Cllr Counihan paid tribute to Ms Quill for her leadership of Killarney Tidy Towns over the years. “We’ve given civic receptions to many organisations and sporting bodies but I think no one has brought success to the town like Yvonne,” Mayor Counihan said. He added: “Yvonne fought the fight when it wasn’t popular.” Referring to Killarney’s scooping of the title Ireland’s Tidiest Large Town in the Tidy Towns awards last September and praising the spirit of volunteerism, he added: “We live in a wonderful town. There is no doubt about it. Last year we got our just rewards for the efforts that people in Tidy Towns put in. People have great pride in the town.” The Mayor and Ms Quill herself also paid tribute to the council and its staff along with the many Tidy Towns volunteers. Cllr Counihan added that the night was, however, about honouring “the captain of the ship”. “The captain of the team, whether it’s football or anything else it the one that we recognise,” he said. Ms Quill also thanked committee members such as Margaret Pigott of Killarney Town Council, Archdeacon Michael Murphy (“for giving us all inspiration”), and Cormac and Kathleen Foley. She noted how the Tidy Towns efforts came about as a result of a comment describing Killarney as “a honky-tonk town”. Ms Quill highlighted the sense of community among the Tidy Towns group, of which she is chairwoman “Killarney Tidy Towns was founded on the motto ‘ní neart go cur le cheile’,” she said. Describing the committee as “a little family that is sticking together through thick and thin”, she noted: “We’re like family. We have our fights. But we have worked our way to the top spot.”

Killarney School of Music welcomes new teachers
TWO new teachers will be hitting all the right notes at Killarney School of Music with the addition to its staff of singing teacher Grace Foley and concertina teacher Greta Curtin. Grace has joined the school’s existing singing teacher Emma Louise Plain, and will provide both individual and group singing classes. Following ten years of voice training under Aine Nic Ghabhan, Grace studied for her degree in Music Performance at the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM) with renowned soprano Virginia Kerr. “Grace has received many awards, and has a wide range of performance experience on TV, radio and concert halls throughout the country,” said Tadhg Buckley of Killarney School of Music. Most recently she performed her operatic debut in the RIAM production of Puccini’s “Giannia Schicchi” and was soloist in Beethoven’s Mass in C at the National Concert Hall. “Not only is Grace an accomplished classical singer, she also has a love of Irish ballads and has a particular interest in local songs,” said Tadhg. Greta Curtin is one of Ireland’s top concertina players. From Brosna, an area steeped in musical tradition, Greta has been playing concertina since the age of five. Having won several Fleadh titles, Greta has toured (and recorded) throughout the US, UK and Europe with groups including Maids of Erin, Rambling House and Gaelforce Dance. “Now Greta has turned her attention to passing on her musical skills and love of music to the younger generation. Greta has several years’ teaching experience and has a wonderful way with children,” said Tadhg. |
