ON THE BALL< Back

WHERE HAVE ALL
THE YOUNG PEOPLE GONE?

THE economic downturn is causing big problems for this country, but for the benefit of this week’s On The Ball we’ll confine it to the implications for sporting clubs. The problems arising for sporting bodies here in Kerry, and that includes the hinterland of Killarney, manifests itself very starkly. Read on, as genius Con wrote so often.
Clubs in all sports codes are being hit by emigration. Just look how sporting teams - and this is most obvious in GAA teams - are mushrooming abroad, not just in the traditional destinations for Irish emigrants such as the USA, England, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. New centres are producing sports teams with native Irish men and women to the fore. Look at Dubai.
This dilemma came to my notice in 2006, but even more forcibly in 2009 while reading the census of students in the Irish primary and post-primary schools provided by the Central Statistics Office. Apply that to sport and the implications are clear. While doing research three years ago relevant to an article I wrote for On the Ball, I sought hard facts relating to GAA, soccer, and rugby. Soccer and rugby organisations were unable to furnish any data, but the GAA was in the middle of its fact-finding mission.
McCrohan report 2011
Without the necessary research, rugby and soccer authorities at national and local level have still no accurate picture of the drain of players to emigration, only vague anecdotal scanty evidence of players they have lost and continue to lose. The Kerry GAA Football Review sub-committee has published its research and it makes for stark reading, especially for the rural clubs in the county.
Joe McCrohan chairs that low-profile group. He is a development officer with South Kerry Partnership and is also chairman of Renard GAA. He is really at the coalface. The report of McCrohan (2011) reveals that Kerry has a total of 75 GAA clubs and 65 of these are rural clubs - which means 86.66% of the clubs are rural. Rural clubs traditionally have been very prominent in Kerry’s successes. Some 175 Kerry footballers from rural clubs have won senior All Ireland medals.
Sharp decline
In a recent publication The Rural Challenge; Empowering Rural Communities to Achieve Growth & Sustainability a joint publication by The Irish Rural Dwellers Association, The Irish Farmers Association and the GAA - the trends for Kerry footballers up to age 18 shows a sharp decline.
In 1998, 69% of Kerry GAA clubs fielded 15-a-side teams in the county minor football leagues. By 2008 this had fallen to 44%. In 2011 it fell further to 37%. Stats are not collated for 2012, but anecdotal evidence suggests to me that falling trend will continue. Look at all the clubs who have had to join up to field a team in the current minor county leagues. The number of amalgamations of two and three clubs is frightening and a real challenge for the new Kerry GAA chairman, Killarney’s own Patrick O’Sullivan. Worst of all is South Kerry. I understand that Sneem had to join up with four other South Kerry clubs to field a minor team this year.
Iveragh is being denuded of its youth. Look at Coláiste na Sceilge. Not too long ago they were All Ireland Hogan Cup winners. I cannot see them even getting to the latter stages of the Munster colleges in the years ahead. Kenmare is another blackspot.
The trend will continue. McCrohan found in 2011 that 23 of the 76 clubs in the county have less than an average of eight boys per class in their local primary school. Six of these are in the South Kerry area alone and it is predicted that all 23 clubs will have to amalgamate with other clubs to field underage teams into the future.
Clubs winning too much at juvenile level
Urban clubs, through no fault of their own, are winning most of the under-age silverware. Look no further than Killarney. Dr Crokes, Legion, and Spa have very big numbers in juvenile ranks. I feel Dr Crokes, in particular are winning too much, to the detriment of other clubs starved of success. No blame to Crokes for winning, but what a win would do for rural clubs.
This came home to me forcibly last week when the bravest of efforts by Gneeveguilla to win the County Under 14 football title was thwarted by Crokes in the final minutes of the game. Gneeveguilla needed to win; Crokes have won more than their share and with their highly developed under-age structures they will most likely continue to win at underage level.
Sports lovers should be indebted to people such as McCrohan, author of his invaluable 2011 report, John Kelly from Spa that magnificent life-long community builder, epitomised in his rowing and GAA connections. Also, Jerome Conway, who is well tuned in to the urban/rural divide, Mickey Ned O’Sullivan from Kenmare and others have also done so much to quantify the extent of the problem and seek the support of local representatives to try and address the plight.
John Kelly
I spoke at length with John Kelly on the issue highlighted here. The school, the church, and the playing field of any sport, and not just the GAA pitches, are at the heart of community life. It will tear communities apart, if they are allowed to die. Pride in place and love of the parish must be fought for in this era of flight to the urban area, he said.
The best game this year to date.
I saw the best football game so far this year last week. In the U-14 Final between Gneeveguilla and Dr Crokes, mentioned above, I witnessed two magnificently prepared equally-matched teams. This was football at its purest and best. Young boys just responding to the alluring call of the leather ball (thank you, Kilcummin, for the inspiration). I had hoped for a draw, to see more of the same vintage football that will rarely emerge in senior games.
Sean Moynihan
Best of luck to Sean Moynihan new Kerry Junior football boss. When he searches for players in the junior clubs, mostly rural, he will meet the plight highlighted in the above article.
Donie Buckley
I am very disappointed to see him go as Kerry coach. His expertise garnered abroad is lost to Kerry.

Schools Blitz A Huge Success
On Thursday May I0th Spa GAA club played host to the young footballers from all the national schools in Killarney parish for the clubs annual schools blitz which catered for children in the 4th classes of the local school and was a mixed team blitz for both boys and girls. The emphasis was very much on fun and was viewed as an opportunity to display their skills rather than the competitive aspect of Gaelic football and this greatly enhanced the enjoyment for participants and spectators alike. No scorelines were recorded and there was no sense of an overall winner rather than each team played each other once with certificates awarded to each player on the day to signify their participation. A special word of thanks to the schools who participated and especially to all the teachers present who were more than willing to take charge of a team on the day ensuring the smooth progress of the event during the day.
The club is especially grateful to Vince Cooper GPO for East Kerry Primary Schools for his invaluable advice in facilitating the event and in particular for providing the referees for the day. Special mention must also go to the young referees whose contribution cannot be overstated in terms of the air of professionalism they brought to the day while remaining a friendly and fair judge of proceedings in the middle of the pitch. In conclusion Míle Buíochas to all involved and in particular Coiste na nÓg. The club would like to sincerely thank John on an excellent organised fun blitz and his hard working committee Anne Holland Paudie Horgan and Susan Gleeson and a special work of thanks to the FÁS workers Chris and Joan for a job well done.

Legion
U14 DIVISION 2 COUNTY FINAL
Legion 1-9 Na Gaeil 2-7
Losing a final is never easy but when its by the narrowest of margins it makes it that bit harder. The u14 side gave all they had and were unlucky at the end not to have had a draw at least as they were narrowly wide with three frees into injury time. A brave performance with some great heart and while they were naturally disappointed they can as a fine panel of young lads be justifiably proud of their efforts.
COUNTY LEAGUE ROUND 3
Killarney Legion 3-8 Ardfert 1-6
The Legion garnered their first brace of county league points after a dominant second half display against Ardfert in Dirreen. The win was both timely and welcome as Ardfert certainly dominated matters in the first half so the Legion showed up well in the second to win the day.
UNDER 12’s
The Under 12 Boys Green & White teams travelled to Tralee Sunday morning for an 11.30am throw in against Kerins O’Rahillys in the last round of the first phase of the County League. Final score: Legion Whites 6-8 O’Rahillys B’s 3-6.This means that the White team finish top of Division 1B and still remain unbeaten this year in all competitions.
The Legion Green team has embraced the concept of the ‘Go games’ this year whereby players play in different positions all over the field to develop their skills, awareness and roles. It can be hard sometimes for the boys to get to grips with their new roles from week to week and therefore results can vary wildly. The Green team played against O’Rahillys A’s in what proved to be an advert for ‘never say die’football. After a shaky start against a strong wind the lads found themselves down 1-8 to 1-3 at half-time.
LEGION REPRESENTATIVES
Well done to Cian Gammell,Robert Osborne, Thando Dube and Jack Hanrahan who were on the East Kerry primary schools side that took on Mid-Kerry and also to Anthony Breen, Robert Leen, Lee Callaghan and Darragh Doherty who were all part of the South Kerry development squad - who incidentally were put through their paces by our own Jonathan Lenniston.
BASKETBALL SUCCESS
Congratulations to David Leane, Paul Moriarty, Barry Slattery, Robert Osborne, Daragh Lyne and Tadhg Doolin who took part in the Super Sevens Basketball tournament last week for their respective schools, St Olivers and the Monastery.
BIRTHDAY GREETINGS
Many happy returns to two stalwart supporters namely Elaine Dux O’ Donoghue and Sean Slattery who celebrated their birthdays last week.

U14 CO LEAGUE DIV 1 FINAL Dr Crokes 4-08 Gneeveguilla 2-10
We played the Division 1 Co League final in Fitzgerald Stadium last Wednesday night. Gneeveguilla had beaten us already in their ground at the start of the league so we knew there was nothing between us and were expecting a big battle. Gneeveguilla deserve great credit for their part in this match and there will be many more great clashes between these sides.
U12 Football We finished our County League campaign on Sunday, playing Laune Rangers. This was a tough encounter as Laune had some very high scores in their previous games. At the final whistle the score was 6-16 to 10-8. Next up are neighbours Legion in the second last game of the East Kerry League.
U12 Hurling Crokes finished their County League run unbeaten, with a brilliant win over Lixnaw. These lads had already won games over Dingle, Kilmoyley and Ardfert. Their unbeaten run is testament to the superb coaching strategy in place in Dr Crokes. This Crokes team will now look forward to the South Kerry league with great confidence. Well done to all players and coaches.

Spa Blitz for 4th class pupils
On Thursday Spa GAA club held its 2nd annual schools blitz. for 4th classes from the schools in the Killarney parish It was run under the Go-Game format with players from each school being mixed up and playing with their peers from other schools in the locality. No scores were recorded - it was all about the fun of playing together. The beaming faces of the children as they made their way home showed that the games were very successful. Many children who may not ordinarily get a chance to play football in a school team environment got the opportunity to showcase their own unique talents and be part of a team event. Congratulations to Spa for the effort and to Vince Cooper GPO for East Kerry Primary Schools whose advice and help were invaluable, and a special thanks to the young referees who took charge of the games.
Social Initiative:
Designed to maintain the involvement of the older generation in their local GAA club, the GAA Social Initiative is now operated in over 200 clubs nationally. John Kelly from Spa along with former Kerry player Kevin Griffin and Joe McCrohan from the South Kerry Partnership have joined forces to extend the participation of clubs in Kerry in this worthwhile initiative. The next group outing will be to Cobh (Centenary of the sinking of the Titanic) and in September the group will have an overnight in Ennistymon visiting The Burren, Milltown Malbay and Lisdoonvarna,

The Gaels of East Kerry thank Tom O’Sullivan for his immense contribution to his county and division and as he retires from the inter-county scene after a glittering football career we reminisce on the many wonderful performances that we were privileged to see from the quiet talented Rathmore man. The Fossa minor side went down gallantly to Kenmare in the county league final in Glenflesk on Saturday evening last. After a superb league campaign, Fossa came into the final unbeaten but , alas, were defeated by an impressive side on the day. Thanks to all the players for the excellent entertainment they provided us with throughout the campaign and thanks also to Dan McKenna, James Cahillane, John Rice, and Colin Myers for the good work they have done throughout the year. Many of the players will now be turning their attentions to the upcoming exams and we would like to send our best wishes to all those who will be sitting exams in the coming weeks.

Under 12: The U12 travelled to Glenflesk Sunday evening and recorded two fine wins. The A team had a super game with the result in the balance until the final minute when Ewan Weldon shot was deflected into the Glenflesk net. It had been a ding dong battle up until then, Fossa’s and in particular Eamonn Murphy’s ability to score goals answering the points Glenflesk were scoring. Gary Cronin also scored a goal and John Talbot scoring three points. The B team recorded a good win scoring some lovely points, Emmet O’Shea, Erica McGlynn, Eoin Myers and Shaun O Connor splitting the posts.

U16 East Kerry League Final:
Currow took on a strong Beaufort team in the East Kerry League Final at Fossa last Monday evening.
The team put in a great performance in the game making the most of the chances that came their way. It was nip and tuck throughout the game and with eight minutes remaining in the game they were ahead. However, a couple of refereeing decisions went against Currow as they were pressing hard to drive home the advantage. Twice in a spate of two minutes they had appeals for penalties turned down and close in frees were awarded instead. Beaufort took full advantage of the let off and was awarded a penalty which they scored. They scored another goal within a minute to win the game. Final Score Currow 3-8 to Beaufort 5-9. A big thanks to Hugh O’Connor and his management team for the preparing the team who gave their all on the day.
